York Gin launches the first 100% recycled UK made gin bottle

We're proud to announce the launch of our new bottle – made entirely from 100% recycled glass by Yorkshire manufacturer Verallia, right here in the UK.

Every one of our bottles is crafted using glass from previously-used bottles, windscreens, and other glass products. This pre-used glass is crushed, melted, and then re-cast into our distinctive York Gin bottle shape, complete with its bevelled design inspired by the historic city walls.

The glass, known as Vista, is made from 100% PCR (post-consumer recycled) glass. This marks the first time UK-made 100% recycled glass has been used for a gin bottle – and we're thrilled to be leading the way.

Verallia shares our excitement and pride in these new bottles, and we're delighted to be working together on this milestone project.

We’re pleased to report that our new bottles have passed every test for robustness and strength – with flying colours.

As Nolan Kane from Verallia put it: “Creating 100% PCR bottles in the UK is a positive step forward for our industry and Verallia’s commitment to sustainability. Verallia has been making bottles in Yorkshire for over 150 years, and collaborating with York Gin for this UK first is an exciting step forward.”

Another benefit of these bottles is their local origin – they travel just 27 miles from Verallia’s Knottingley factory to our York Gin distillery. It doesn’t get much more sustainable than that.

Using 100% recycled glass does affect the colour slightly, giving it a lovely blue-ish tint – which we see as a unique feature, not a flaw.

As York’s first legal distillery, we craft spirits inspired by our city’s 2,000-year history. So using glass that has lived previous lives gives each of our bottles its own character and story.

Sustainability has always been at the core of York Gin. We constantly strive to be as eco-conscious as possible while upholding the highest standards. We always buy local when local is best – and with this 100% recycled bottle, sustainability and local manufacturing come together beautifully.

We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Verallia on this project. Our motto may be ‘History in the Tasting’, but we believe this bottle represents the future.

Our other sustainability efforts include:

• A refill station in our central York shop where customers can refill any spirits bottle with their favourite York Gin

• A refill scheme for trade customers, using jerry cans to refill their existing bottles

• An electric delivery van

• Ensuring none of our waste ends up in landfill

• Running our distillery and shop on a green energy tariff

• Using sustainable Yorkshire-based printers, Label Makers, for our bottle labels

We’re honoured that Verallia chose York Gin for this UK first. It’s a reflection of our shared dedication to sustainability and innovation – and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead.
