The Three Tuns in their own words ...
The Three Tuns Public House on Coppergate has stood the test of time, being here in York for more than three hundred years.
Beer was kept in wooden casks of varying sizes: a Firkin held 9 gallons, a Kilderkin 18 gallons, a Barrel 36 gallons, a Hogshead 54 gallons, and the largest was the Tun, holding 252 gallons of beer.
The sign used for the Three Tuns is derived from the De Winter’s Coat of Arms, which had a gable and chevron arches between three tuns. The licence has existed under the name of The Three Tuns since at least 1782, when Thomas Pink was the proprietor. During the century between 1830 and 1930, the name was changed to the Yorkshireman Coffee House and then shortened to just the Yorkshireman.
During renovation work, a construction company uncovered a cache of gold coins amidst improvements to the customer service area, probably hidden for later recovery by those fleeing from one of York's many conquerors. Unfortunately, the coins were never recovered and now belong to York's rich history!
Today, you will be given a very warm welcome in this city public house. Within its picturesque interior, you will be offered real hand-pulled ales conditioned in casks. Your hunger will be satisfied by one of the generous portions of Yorkshire fare provided by the landlord. Well worth a visit, whether you are a tourist or a resident of York.
From Viking invaders to fighters in the Siege of York, many feet have trodden this way, and today, as you relax in this one-of-a-kind inn, you will feel the history of York's past.
