More about the House of the Trembling Madness
For the past 170 years, 14 Lendal has housed the old saddlery and harness maker, Robson & Cooper, and so it’s only fitting that an existing York 'institution' takes up the reins of this magnificent Georgian building.
The beautiful, restored Craft Beer Mansion has a rich history, and has been associated with many local significant characters, including astronomer Sir John Goodricke, Sir Richard Osbaldeston, aristocrat Michael Barstow; and Sir Thomas Widdrington, the Recorder of York during the reign of King Charles I. After the restoration of Charles II, the house was occupied by Sir Thomas Rokeby, a local judge, until York Lord Mayor Alderman Henry Baynes built two houses on the site in the 18th century. By this time, a grand Georgian townhouse, by the name of Fitzwilliam House, Sir William Wentworth, Baronet of Bretton in the West Riding, lived there with his wife Lady Wentworth until 1742.
After sensitive and thorough restoration of the building was undertaken by the owners York Conservation Trust, we moved in with a shiny bar under each arm, and a vision of a new Madness way! The project was joint winner in the York Restoration Design awards 2018 alongside York Minster and The Mansion House. Now owned and run by Andrew, Richard and Amanda who own Fabler bars, we boast 5 seasonal core keg lines plus 14 guest kegs and 3 casks, a wide selection of spirits and a range of craft beer cans and bottle.
