About the Judge’s Lodging

The building is from the early 18th Century and was originally built as a doctor’s home. It still boasts an original sweeping Georgian staircase - the only one of its kind the UK.

In 1806, it became the official judges’ residence in York, for the quarterly sessions at the Assize Courts at York Castle. It remained the official judges’ residence until 1976.

In 2012 Daniel Thwaites plc bought it - and since 2014 it has been a luxury hotel, restaurant and pub with a gorgeous courtyard at the front that has become one of York’s most popular beer gardens.

Located on York’s Lendal, it is close to the beautiful Museum Gardens and York minster. And a couple of minute’s walk from the main shopping areas including Stonegate and Shambles.
